When I was a kid, my favorite part of getting a new cassette (yes, I’m that old) was opening up the case an revealing the good stuff: the lyrics.

I would pull out the inlay and examine the words to each song. I guess even then I had a fascination with words.

But songs are like poetry. And poetry is life. Mix great lyrics with a great melody and you have recipe for success!

Here are some great opening lines:

“Welcome to your life. There’s no turning back.” – Everybody wants to rule the world, Tears for Fears

“I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend…” – Jumper, Third Eye Blind

“Say your prayers little one. Don’t forget my son to include everyone…”
– Enter the Sandman, Metallica

” I met her in a club down in old Soho
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry-cola.”
– Lola, The Kinks

“I don’t practice Santeria
I ain’t got no crystal ball.” – Santeria, Sublime

“Gold teeth and a curse for this town were all in my mouth.
Only, i don’t know how they got out, dear.” – New Slang, The Shins

“There are places I remember
All my life though some have changed.” – In My Life, The Beatles

“I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray.”- 1999, Prince

“Daddy I know you’re going to be upset. I was always your little girl.” -Madonna, Papa Don’t Preach

“I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation.” – Africa,Toto

Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own.” Viva la Vida, Coldplay

“Although loneliness has always been a friend of mine, I’m leaving my life in your hands.”- As Long As You Love Me, Backstreet Boys
